Go over brief overview of summary of our understanding & perspective of living system from ancient times up until today
- Deserts in Africa to farmlands of America
- Niches in every land system
- Sea: Deep sea thermal vents, top of ocean aquatic life
- Air: birds, insects, microbes floating around
- Every available ecosystem abundant with life
- Classification of systems of life, most broad view then narrowing down
• Domains
• Kingdom
• Phylum
• Class
• Order
• Family
• Genus
• Species
- Relation, evolutionary distance: all life on earth ultimately came from one primordial cell that evolved & gave rise to all life forms we see today
• This plot shows evolutionary distance each living system is from that primordial cell and by extension how far each living system is evolutionarily from each of the other systems on the screen
• Bacteria, single celled organisms that contain no organelles, very simple in their structure and very tiny, bag of enzymes and nucleic acid
• Archaeans, very simple, more recently described, exist in some of the most inhospitable places on the plane
• Eukarya include multicellular organisms: animals, fungi, plants & many other multicellular and a few unicellular forms (e.g. yeast, makers of bread & ethanol), much larger than prokaryotic & archaean cells + contain specialized organelles (nucleus & mitochondrion)
